Shannon Thompson Steps Down as Head Volleyball Coach

Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher announced Tuesday that head volleyball coach Shannon Thompson has resigned her position at the College after being named the head coach at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. Thompson served as the Golden Griffins' head coach for two seasons.

"Shannon took over the Canisius volleyball program during a challenging time," Maher said "She did a terrific job leading our program through the COVID-19 pandemic. On the court, she led our program to a MAAC Championship match appearance, and I was impressed with the strong culture she built within our program both on and off the floor. We appreciate and thank her for her service and dedication to the College and to our student-athletes. We wish her the best of luck as she takes the next step in her career."

"I want to take this time to thank Bill Maher, Lisa Liotta and Matt Reitnour for providing me with the opportunity to lead the Canisius volleyball program for the last two seasons," Thompson said. "Thank you to all the supporting staff members who assisted me and provided behind the scenes support for the team. I am very grateful for my time at Canisius and for the relationships I was able to build while here in Buffalo. I appreciate all of the players and the growth we have experienced together. Additionally, I value their part in empowering and shaping me to become a better coach. I am proud of the student-athletes and their growth and accomplishments, both on and off the court. I am excited to follow these players and their journeys as they continue to excel in all aspects of their lives. I wish all of the Canisius athletic teams all the best in their future endeavors. GO GRIFFS!"

Canisius will immediately begin a national search for Thompson's replacement.
