Five Things to Know: Indoor Track Travels to a Pair of Meets This Weekend

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1) At the Starting Line
The Canisius men's and women's indoor track teams return to action Friday when they visit Rochester, N.Y. for the RIT Invitational, while select runners will travel to Boston to compete in the prestigious David Hemery Valentine Invitational. The meets mark the conclusion of the regular season for the Golden Griffins.

2) Meet Details
The Valentine Invite begins Friday at 10 a.m. and continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The meet will feature elite races for the men's and women's mile, 3000-meter and 5000-meter distance races.

Senior Libby Benzer and junior Andrew Perreault are set to run in the one-mile, while senior Michael Peppy and junior Tom Appenheimer will face tough competition in the men's 5000. Junior Marissa Silba looks to set a new personal-best time in the women's 3000.

The RIT Invitational will be held at the Gordon Field House and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday.

3) Last Time Out
The Golden Griffins put together another strong performance two weeks ago during the YSU Mid-Major Invitational.

In the women's competition, Benzer secured a second-place finish in the 3000-meter race with a time of 10:17.52. Silba claimed fifth in the race, crossing the finish line in 10:28.45. In the 1000-meter run, junior Olivia Moran and senior Bailey Pierce posted fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively. The women's 'A' team of Silba, Katie Gawronski, Leah Wardner and Benzer placed second in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:37.49.

In the men's competition, Peppy ran the 3000 in 8:30.70, which was good for a fourth-place finish. Perreault earned fifth in the 3000 with a time of 8:30.97. The men's 'A' team also claimed second in the distance medley relay with Peppy, Turner Dirrigl, Ronan McDonald and Perreault crossing the finish line in 10:18.09.

4) History in the Making
Benzer looks to establish a school record in the women's one-mile run this weekend. Her personal-best time of 5:11.49 puts her five seconds behind Siobhan Quinn's school record of 5:06.04.

At the RIT Invitational, junior Sylvea Cleary hopes to reclaim the school record in the 60-meter dash. She will race against current school record holder Bria Jordan.

5) Up Next
Canisius heads to New York City to compete in the 2022 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 19-20 at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory.
