Cheatwood Joins Baseball Staff

Canisius head baseball coach Matt Mazurek announced the hiring of pitching coach John Cheatwood, on Monday.

"John will come in to be our new pitching coach at a unique time" Mazurek said. "John brings experience as a player at the Division I level to our program and experience working with high-level athletes in various capacities early in his coaching career.
"He is a great fit for what our current players and the future players in our program need.  We expect John to blend in quickly to what has been built here and continue to take things to new heights."

Cheatwood comes to Main Street after serving as the assistant pitching coaching at Wabash Valley College. While in Mount Carmel, Ill., Cheatwood worked with pitchers to adjust their mechanics, break down film and design lifting and rehab programs throughout the season. He also worked with recruiting for the next class of pitchers to come to the program.

Cheatwood also served as the pitching coach for the Wilmington Sharks of the Costal Plain League. With the Sharks, he helped manage the team to a 23-win season while also helping pitchers' rehab from injuries and prepare pitchers for their upcoming season of college baseball.

As for his college career, Cheatwood began at Lincoln Trail Community College where he was an NJCAA Academic All-American during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He transfered to Marshall University, where he would play from 2019-2021 before ending his NCAA career at Lipscomb university this past year. While with the Bison, he pitched 24.1 innings of relief work, going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA.
