The Canisius hockey team hosts Niagara Saturday in an exhibition contest LECOM Harborcenter. Puck drop for the preseason matchup between the Golden Griffins and Purple Eagles is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Trevor Large, Canisius welcomes back 19 letterwinners from last season's squad that completed the 2021-22 season with a 16-16-3 overall record and posted a second-place finish in the Atlantic Hockey standings with a 13-11-2 league ledger.

In the preseason coaches' poll, Canisius was picked fifth with 62 total points. Defending regular season and tournament champion AIC was selected first after receiving eight first-place votes and 88 total points. Sacred Heart received the other two first-place votes and 76 total points to claim second while Air Force (68) was third and RIT (66) fourth.

Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski was named an Atlantic Hockey Association Preseason Co-Player of the Year, league officials announced on Sept. 20. Barczewski also earned a spot on the Preseason All-Atlantic Hockey Team.

Canisius begins the regular season Oct. 7-8 with a non-conference series at Penn State. Puck drop for the series opener at the Pegula Ice Arena is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. while the finale will take place the following evening at 6 p.m.
