Mazurek Adds Cortright to Baseball Staff, Promotes Schrantz

Canisius baseball head coach Matt Mazurek announced on Friday that the team has added former Golden Griffins ace Garrett Cortright to the coaching staff as a graduate assistant, as well as promoting former graduate assistant Max Schrantz to assistant coach.

Cortright joins Mazurek and assistant coach Brandon Bielecki on a staff that has led the Blue and Gold to the 2018 MAAC Championship and the conference's 2019 regular-season title since Mazurek's elevation to head coach. Schrantz will enter his third season as part of the staff.

A 2013 draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles, Cortright had a stellar three-year career with the Griffs, making 41 starts for Canisius while compiling a 3.40 ERA and 181 strikeouts across 275.2 innings. Earning All-MAAC First Team honors in 2013 and Second Team honors in 2012, the right-hander was also named to the MAAC's All-Tournament Team in all three seasons with the Blue and Gold. The Hamburg, N.Y., native then spent five seasons in the professional ranks, pitching for the Orioles organization and reaching Triple-A Norfolk in 2016 before playing the 2017 season in the Miami Marlins' system.

After retiring from pro ball, Cortright entered the coaching ranks by coaching the 13U team for the Full Circuit youth travel organization and serving as the pitching coach for Medaille during the 2020 season.

Schrantz has been an instrumental part of the staff the past two years after wrapping up a successful playing career at Mercyhurst. The Dunkirk, N.Y., native has coached the Griffs' catchers during his first two years on Main Street, helping Billy Krull be named to the 2019 Buster Posey Award watchlist. Schrantz was also integral in rising redshirt junior Mike Mazzara's transition from the middle of the infield to behind the plate prior to the 2020 season, as well as assisting in coordination of the pitchers, hitters, recruiting and video scouting.
