Record-Breaking Performances Highlight Day One of MAAC Championships

Led by two program record-breaking times in the 200 and 800 Medley Relays, the Canisius swimming and diving program completed the first day of the 2020 MAAC Championships Wednesday evening at the Burt Flickinger Center.
 
The Canisius women started off the evening hot with a record-setting performance in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. With a time of 1:45.30, the team of Kelsey Childress, Isabel Sapio, Grace Van Buren and Sage Pollack broke the previous Blue and Gold record from 2015.
 
Placing fifth on the men's side of the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Kenyon Winkky, Luke Kennedy, Mike Maurer and Kyle Griffin earned a time of 1:30.76.
 
All three divers that competed on the women's side for Canisius scored in the 1-meter diving finals. Senior Gianna Cornelia took home the silver medal in the event with a score of 238.75, while fellow senior Vinnie Costanzo took fourth (227.95) and sophomore Adrianna Bolender placed eighth (189.80).
 
On the men's side in the 800 Medley Relay, the team of Kyle Kimerer, Dan Kuznetsov, Alexander Kunes and Liam O'Connell finished in eighth place with a new school record of 6:49.03.
 
The Griffs will compete in day two of the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships tomorrow, beginning with six preliminary swimming events at 10 a.m.
 
Event Notes

• The Canisius men's team currently stands in seventh overall after day one with 50 points.

• On the women's side, the Griffs are placed second with 97 points. Marist leads with 113 points after the first session, and Rider is sitting in third with 93 points.
• 14 female Griffs made the MAAC All-Academic Team: Dana Bender, Adriana Bolender, Kelly Burns, Madison Chapin, Kelsey Childress, Gianna Cornelia, Halle Dueringer, Morgan Farman, Ashlynn Gilfillan, Sophie Hunter, Sierra Kenney, Cara Smith, Lauren Thorne, and Lauren Willitt.
• Nine Golden Griffins on the men's side were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team: Mason Adams, Jordan Chatelle, Luke Kennedy, Kyle Kimerer, Alexander Kunes, Daniel Kuznetsov, Liam O'Connell, Kenyon Winkky and AJ Yost.
