Kennedy, Burns Named Student-Athletes of the Month for October

Swimming and diving seniors Lucas Kennedy and Kelly Burns have been named Canisius Student-Athletes of the Month for October.

Kennedy was an eight-time winner in the 100 breaststroke event during his junior campaign for the Blue and Gold. Kennedy's success in the event included setting the school record with a time of 54.88 seconds. During the 2019-20 season, Kennedy was also a four-time winner in the 200 breaststroke. A product of Boston, N.Y., Kennedy was named to the 2020 MAAC All-Academic Team. Lucas is studying marketing at the College.

Burns earned four third-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle event during her junior season for the Griffs. Additionally, Burns had three top-three times at Gannon on January 25th, as well as placing first in the 400-yard freestyle relay twice during the 2019-20 campaign. Burns was a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that set the school record last season with a time of 3:30.36. The Buffalo, N.Y. native, was named to the 2020 MAAC All-Academic Team. Kelly is studying health and wellness at Canisius.

The Canisius athletic department has a strong tradition of success in the classroom, as all 20 varsity programs posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2020 spring semester. Sixteen teams recorded a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, and the school's 345 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.41 for the term.

The spring semester also saw 58 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Those 58 student-athletes were part of a group of 236 Canisius student-athletes to record a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. That breaks down to 68.4 percent of the College's student-athlete population.
