Indoor Track Finishes Strong at SPIRE Midwest Open

The Canisius indoor track teams closed out competition at the SPIRE Midwest Open in Geneva, Ohio Saturday with strong performances from both the men's and women's teams.
 
The day was highlighted by freshman Sylvea Cleary and senior Rachel Joachimi who set program records in the women's 60 meter and 600 meter, respectively. Cleary clocked in at 9.09 seconds, 0.07 seconds faster than the previous 60m record which was set by teammate Jackie Lamica last season. In the women's 600, Joachimi crossed the finish line first in her heat with a time of 1:44.48. That time was nearly ten seconds faster than the previous record.
 
Junior Leah Wardner also ran in the 600, finishing with a time of 1:48.08.
 
In the men's mile, freshman Tyler Clark placed seventh overall with a time of 4:23.95, followed by teammates Nick Neamtu and Matt Beveridge who recorded times of 4:24.02 and 4:24.33, for 13th and 14th overall.
 
Track newcomer, senior Madeline Beaulieu finished first in her heat of the women's 800 with a time of 2:26.35, good enough for eighth overall. In the men's edition of the 800, junior Connor Doran finished 11th overall with a time of 1:57.21, a top-15 time in program history.
 
Senior Kayla Leo placed 26th overall in the women's seeded 3K, crossing the finish line with a time of 11:09.00.
 
The Blue and Gold had six members of the men's team run in the seeded 3K, all of which recorded top-25 finishes. Sophomore Michael Peppy and freshman Tom Appenheimer recorded strong times of 8:49.30 and 8:49.92, respectively. Junior Turner Dirrigl clocked in at 8:58.98, followed by senior Austin Oetinger at 9:02.13. Freshman Andrew Perreault edged out senior Anthony Belfatto, 9:04.72 to 9:04.73.
 
Canisius had two teams compete in the men's 4x400 relay. Canisius' A team of Nicholas Spinosa, Sam Viggiani, Clark and Marcus Brown finished ahead of the B team comprised of Richard Moore, Neamtu, Beveridge and Doran by eight-tenths of a second, 3:34.17 to 3:34.99.

Canisius will head back to Ohio next week, this time to Youngstown where the men's and women's program will compete in the Youngstown State Invitational.
