Kyle Griffin Places Third on Day Two of MAAC Championships

Senior Vivian Mroz placed fourth on the women's 3-meter board with a score of 223.60, while junior Kyle Griffin broke a school record (20.73) in the men's 50-yard freestyle, as the Canisius swimming and diving programs wrapped up day two of the MAAC Championships Thursday evening at the Burt Flickinger Center.

After two days of the event, the men's team is in fifth and the women's team sits in fourth-place overall in the team portion of the championship. Fairfield leads the women's championship with 279 points, while Rider sits in second-place with 224 points. Marist is in third-place with 220 points and Canisius ranks fourth with its 160 points.

In the men's championship, Rider leads the way after two days with 252 points. Bryant is in second-place with 230 points, Marist is in third-place (190.5) and Iona sits in fourth-place (163). The Blue and Gold round out the top-five with 129 points.

In the diving portion, Mroz was joined by juniors Vinnie Costanzo (211.90) and Gianna Cornelia (185.65) who placed fifth and eighth in the women's three-meter diving finals. 

The women's 200-free relay team of junior Ashlynn Gilfillan, freshman Lauren Willitt and the sophomore duo Sage Pollack and Kelly Burns, took fourth for the Griffs with a mark of 1:36.91. 

Freshman Cara Smith placed ninth in the 500-free event with a time of 5:04.98. Sophomore Kelsey Childress (2:08.29) earned a fifth-place finish in the 200-IM event. In the 50-free event, Gilfillan and Pollack tied for ninth with a mark of 24.20.  

For the men, freshman Liam O'Connell (4:41.64) and senior James Pokornowski(4:37.8) placed fifth and 15th for the Blue and Gold in the men's 500-free event. Griffin broke the school record in the 50-free with a time of 20.67, good for a bronze medal. Freshman Kyle Kimerer had a strong performance as he tied senior Kenyon Winkky for 15th place in the 50-free event (21.32). The men's relay unit of senior Michael Shenal, Griffin, Winkky and Kimerer also put together a time of 1:22.78 in the 200-free relay and earned a fourth-place finish in that event. 
 
Having completed the first half of championship action, the Griffs will now turn their sights to day three of the conference championships, which begins with 10 swimming preliminaries along with the men's three-meter preliminary tomorrow at 10 a.m.
