Lopez Acosta Wins Second-Straight MAAC Libero of the Week

Canisius senior Sofia Lopez Acosta was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Libero of the Week after she recorded 50 digs and five assists last weekend, the conference announced Tuesday.

This marks the second-straight week Lopez Acosta has been honored as the top libero in the MAAC, and the third time in her career.

In the Golden Griffins' match against Iona on Saturday, the Mexicali, Mexico native powered the Blue and Gold with 21 digs and two assists. She then tallied a team-high 29 digs in Canisius' 3-1 win over Manhattan, adding on four service aces and three assists. In all, the senior ended the weekend by averaging 6.25 digs per set to help the Griffs improve to 6-9 overall and a 4-2 record in conference play.

Lopez Acosta's 5.54 digs per set on the season currently leads the conference and ranks 14th nationally among qualified players. The senior has now recorded four-straight matches with 20-or-more digs. She also sits tied for eighth in the MAAC with 0.30 service aces per set. In conference matches, she is first in the MAAC with 5.61 digs per set and seventh with 0.48 service aces per set.

Canisius hosts defending MAAC champion Fairfield Oct. 6, followed by Quinnipiac Oct. 7. The opening serve for both matches is set for 1 p.m. from the Koessler Athletic Center. The contest versus Quinnipiac can be seen live on ESPN3.
