Leonard Named MAAC Rookie of the Week

Canisius freshman Claire Leonard was named the MAAC Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after she recorded double-digit point totals in three of four matches last week.

Leonard is the first Canisius volleyball player to be honored by the conference office this season for their athletic play. Last season, Cassidy Ceriani picked up two Rookie of the Week honors.

During the two-day Duquesne Invitational, Leonard shined. The Bettendorf, Iowa, native tallied 48 kills, totaling an average of 12.5 points per match.

The six-foot outside hitter is currently ranked fourth in the league with an even 3.00 kills per set and is the top-ranked freshman in that category. Leonard also has 75 kills on the year, which ranks fifth best in the league and is the most for any first-year player. She also ranks among the top 10 in the MAAC in hitting percentage (.208).

The Blue and Gold come home this weekend as they host their first tournament since 2013. The Canisius Invitational will take place Sept. 8-9. The Griffs welcome Bucknell, Charlotte, and Eastern Washington to the Koessler Athletic Center for the two-day event.

Canisius plays Friday at 6 p.m. and twice on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The Griffs' 6 p.m. matches will be broadcast on ESPN3, with 10 a.m. contest against Charlotte and the non-Canisius matches being broadcast on GoGriffs.com.
