S&D Gets Three Champions On Day Three of MAACS

Junior Rebecca Anthone, senior Marissa Watroba and junior Travis Wright each won an individual championship, as the canisius swimming and diving program completed day three of the MAAC Championships Friday evening from the Burt Flickinger Center.

“It was great to have three MAAC Champions walking away from tonight's session,” said head coach Scott Vanderzell. “The team is working very hard and is battling for position in each and every race.”

Anthone was the first Griff to claim a victory, winning the women's 200 free event with a time of 1:52.72. Watroba would quickly follow suit, winning the women's 100 breast in 1:05.34 in the very next female race, while Wright would claim his second individual championship of the week, scoring a 357.75 in the men's three-meter diving event.

While winning the fourth MAAC Championship of his career, Wright also broke a MAAC Championship and Canisius record by posting a 398.45 in the three-meter preliminary event. The performance also bested his previous career-high by nearly 15 points (383.85).

With her victory in the 100 breast, Watroba broke her previous record in the event of 1:05.90, which she set last season. The senior would appear in two other events, placing third in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:36.89, while also appearing in the 400-meter relay team of sophomore Cassie Brousseau, Junior Meghan Tyler and championship teammate Anthone, who combined for a second-place finish at 3:57.20.

Also performing on the women's side were Brousseau and freshman Alicia Shenal in the women's 100 back, placing fourth and fifth respectively (58.19, 58.53) and Tyler who finished eighth in the women's 100 fly at 58.95.

On the men's side, junior Greg Staebell placed fifth in the men's 100 yard back at 51.04, while freshman teammate Kenyon Winkky ended in sixth in 52.16. Winkky would go on to place eigth in the 100 butterfly at 50.83, while Junior Dan Dirrigl finished fifth with a time of 49.89.

The men's 400 medley relay team would also perform on day three, with Staebell, senior Christian Westermeier, Dirrigl and junior Tommy Kirch combining for a fifth-place finish at 3:25.40.

Senior Brent Carbone would place third in the three-meter diving event with a score of 302.50, while junior Josh Larcom finished in seventh place with a score of 240.70 

EVENT NOTES
•The Blue and Gold remain in third place on both sides. The women have a total of 387 points, while the men are at 366.
•Marist maintains a first place lead on the women's side with 532 points, while Rider is in second place with 409. Canisius reamains ahead of Iona (345), Fairfield (227), Niagara (220), Siena (186), Manhattan (153), Monmouth (88) and Saint Peter's (44).
•Rider keeps possession of first place on the men's side totaling 585.5 points, while Marist remains in second place with 437 points. Bryant trails the Griffs in fourth with 329.5 points. Iona stands in fifth place (274), Niagara is in sixth place (266), Saint Peter's is in seventh (166), Manhattan is in eighth place (141.5), Fairfield is in ninth (134.5) and Monmouth is in tenth place with 73 points.
