Junior Rebecca Anthone placed second in the women's 500 free with a time of 5:01.78, while the men's 200 free relay team broke a school record (1:23.54), as the Canisius swimming and diving program wrapped up day two of the MAAC Championships Thursday evening from the Burt Flickinger Center.
Anthone would place second again in the final women's event of the evening as part of the women's 200 free relay team of freshman Ashlynn Gilfillan, freshman Alize Allen, and senior Hannah Graesser (1:36.23).
The women would see two sixth place finishes from sophomore Marissa DiRienzo in the women's 200 yard IM (2:10.73), and Graesser in the 50-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Vivian Mroz continued the Griffs strong diving by placing second in the women's three-meter event with a score of 239.35, while freshman Gianna Cornelia finished fifth at 209.40.
On the men's side, seniors Christian Westermeier and Cam MacDonald finished the men's 50 free in seventh and eighth respectively with times of 21.14 and 21.24.
The two would go on to place third in the men's 200 free relay with teammates junior Tommy Kirch and sophomore Michael Shenal to break the school record.
"Overall, we had great relays tonight and we stepped up at finals individually with great racing and diving," said head coach Scott Vanderzell.
Having completed the first half of championship action, the Griffs will now turn their sights to day three of the Championship, which begins with 10 swimming preliminaries, along with the mens three-meter preliminary tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Event Notes
• On the women's side, the Griffs rank third in the standings with 207 points after day two of competition. Marist remains in first place with 279 points, while Rider is in second with 231 points.
• On the men's side, Rider is now in first place with 253 points. Marist is in second place with 201 points, while the Griffs are in third with 178 points.
• The men's 200 free relay team broke a 2013-14 record set by both Westermeier and MacDonald, along with former Griffs Colin Landweer and Nick Sereday (1:24.01).
