GRIFFS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK
The Golden Griffins attempt to bounce back from an opening night loss to Colgate, last Friday, 70-63, when St. Bonaventure comes to town on Wednesday. The Blue and Gold appeared to be in the drivers seat, erasing an early first-quarter deficit, with a 22-6 second quarter. However, leading by one going into the final frame, Canisius' offense went cold, scoring just six points in the fourth quarter, and Colgate slipped past the Griffs 70-63. Margret Halfdanardottir led the way with 18 points, while Sara Hinriksdottir had 11 and Maria Welch added 10.Â
CANISIUS GOES FOR TWO-IN-A-ROW AGAINST BONNIES
The Golden Griffins exercised a demon last season by defeating St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y., as the Griffs snapped a 10-game losing skid to the Bonnies, dating back to the 2005-06 season. Canisius' defense was key early on as the team held St. Bonaventure to just 18 points through the first two quarters and tallied 32 of their own. The Blue and Gold then used a 27-point outbreak in the fourth frame to seal the 74-57 victory. The Blue and Gold attempts to win its second straight victory against St. Bonaventure for the first time in the Terry Zeh era. Winning against the Bonnies at the KAC has been an issue as the team hasn't wont a matchup against St. Bonaventure at home since Nov. 20, 1999.Â
JILL-OF-ALL-TRADES
Hinriksdottir has been a tremendous asset for the Blue and Gold over the last two seasons, breaking out in a big way in her sophomore campaign. Against Colgate to open the season she showed that she has a diverse skill set, scoring double-figure points (11) and chipping in eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the team in both categories. It was just the third time in her career that she has notched double-figure points while also adding over five rebounds and assists each.Â
THE RACE TO 1000 POINTS
The race to see who the next 1,000 point scorer in the program's history is on, and the two players with the best shot are juniors Sara Hinriksdottir and Maria Welch. The pair have both combined for over 500 points through the first two years of their Griffs' career and it will be interesting to see if one or both achieve the vaunted feat. Hinriksdottir came into the year with 585 points and added 11 to that mark to now total, 596. Welch is slightly behind her as she now has 527 after her 10 point effort a week ago.
INTO THE FIRE
Canisius wasn't afraid to give their first-year players a taste of action in their first games, with Olivia Vernon and Anndea Zeigler getting the most playing time, while Danielle Sanderlin also saw the floor. Not only did Vernon see action but she was in the starting lineup, sharing point guard duties, while Zeigler made the biggest impact laying in her first two buckets of her career and adding a trio of free-throws. Vernon played the most minutes of the trio, tallying 19 minutes, and added a free throw make, while Sanderlin played for five minutes for the Blue and Gold. Expect the trio to allow the Canisius bench to do different things and add to the depth.Â
