S&D Gains Sixth Straight Sweep Over Niagara

The Canisius swimming and diving program swept Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara for the sixth consecutive season this afternoon from Lewiston, N.Y., with the women winning in strong fashion 186-113 and the men winning in equally convincing fashion 177.5-122.5.

The Blue and Gold saw numerous victories on the day, beginning with the 200-yard medley relay as the team of freshman Kenyon Winkky, senior Christian Westermeier, junior Dan Dirrigl and senior Cam MacDonald won the event at 1:34.85.

The Griffs then swept the 1000-yard freestyle events with sophomore Julia Sagasta and junior Collin Zapisek winning the events at 11:05.45 and 10:03.96 respectively, before junior Rebecca Anthone and senior Gustavo Dos Santos would win in the 200-yard freestyle events with times of 1:56.87 and 1:47.03.

Canisius would see multiple individual wins from sophomore Cassie Brousseau in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke (1:01.25, 2:11.50), junior Greg Staebell in the same events (52.96, 1:58.44) and Macdonald in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle (21.85, 48.70. Marissa Watroba, who won the 100, 200-yard breaststroke (1:08.68, 2:30.35) and 200 IM (2:14.79), along with Anthone who also won the 100 and 500-yard freestyle (54.21, 5:19.90) led all Griffs with three individual event victories.

Other wins included sophomore James Pokornowski in the 500-yard free (4:55.45), and wins in in both 400 free medleys.

Junior Travis Wright swept his diving events winning the one meter with a score of 331.13 and the three meter with a score of 334.35. Sophomore Vivian Mroz also swept her events wining the one meter with a score of 228.98 and the three meter at 334.35.

The Golden Griffins wrapped up the swimming portion of the regular season with the sweep, while the diving team will travel to RIT next weekend to close the season.
