Travis Wright Named Male Athlete of the Year

Canisius sophomore diver Travis Wright has been named the 2015-16 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year, the athletic department announced Thursday. Wright is the second member of the school's swimming and diving program to be named the school's Male Athlete of the Year, joining with former swimmer Shawn Parkhurst, who won the award in 2011-12.

The 2016 MAAC Diver of the Year, Wright is the first Canisius diver to place in both the one and three-meter diving events at the NCAA Zone A Championships. The top diver in eight of the 14 events he competed in during the 2015-16 season, the Derby, New York native earned MAAC Diver of the Year accolades after he won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships in the Flickinger Center last February.

In the MAAC one-meter final, Wright posted a score of 314.0, a new career best, and his score of 349.4 in the three-meter competition also set a new career high and a new school record as well. At the NCAA Zone A Championships, he placed eighth in the three-meter event and 17th in the one-meter competition.

Wright was one of four nominees for the Canisius Male Athlete of the Year award, the highest honor presented to a Canisius male athlete by the College's athletic department. The other nominees were Shane Conacher (hockey), Jeff Edwards (men's lacrosse) and Chad Maloy (men's cross country/track).
