Box Score Senior Nick Tuttle and junior Jeff Edwards both had a career-best game as the Canisius men's lacrosse team used a four-goal run in the final quarter to rally past Manhattan, 13-11. With the win, the Griffs improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-2 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers drop to 2-10 and 0-3 versus league foes.
Edwards recorded a personal-best seven points in the winning effort, netting his third career hat trick to go along with a career-high four assists, while Tuttle also set career highs with five points and four goals. The duo netted all four tallies in the fourth-quarter comeback with Edwards setting up Tuttle for the first three goals before scoring one of his own to lead the team to victory.
“We knew that we needed to win today if we wanted to compete for a bid in the MAAC Tournament,” said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. “I don't think it was our best performance but we fought for 60 minutes and found a way to win in the end. Jeff Edwards and Nick Tuttle were just phenomenal today. When we needed them the most, they performed likes champs and carried us to victory. It always feels good to get the win and improving to 2-2 in conference is huge.”
Sophomore Connor Kearnan added three points with two goals and one assist for the Griffs, while seniors Vince Gravino, Mike Perrino and Mike Vavonese and junior Lewis Vaccaro rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each.
Junior Thomas Zacher earned his first collegiate victory between the pipes in his first career appearance for the Griffs, recording three saves in the final 22:23 of action and yielding only two goals.
The Griffs got off to a strong start in the contest, netting seven goals in the first quarter – the team's highest-scoring quarter against a conference foe in eight years. After trading goals three times to start the game, Canisius netted four tallies in a 2:40 span to claim a 7-3 lead. Sophomore Steven Coss helped cap the run when he setup up Edwards for a goal off a faceoff victory with just 16 seconds left as the Griffs pulled ahead by four.
However, Manhattan answered with a tally with just two ticks left in the first and carried the momentum into the second frame. The Jaspers scored the only two goals of the quarter as the Manhattan netminder made six saves in the period and the teams headed into the intermission with the Griffs leading, 7-6.
The Jaspers continued their strong play in the third quarter, scoring a pair of goals just 49 seconds apart to grab their first lead of the day, 8-7, with 10:30 remaining. Kearnan ended a nearly 22-minute drought to tie the game only for Manhattan to answer right back. The teams traded goals one more time as the Jaspers headed into the final frame with a 10-9 advantage.
The fourth quarter, however, is when Tuttle and Edwards took over. The duo connected on Tuttle's second goal of the game with 13:52 left to square the game at 10. Edwards then found the senior open two more times at the 8:39 and 5:08 marks before finishing the four-goal run by himself with an unassisted tally with 60 seconds remaining. Manhattan added the final goal but it wasn't enough as Canisius secured the 13-11 victory.
The Griffs outshot the Jaspers, 42-29, in the winning effort, while winning the ground ball battle, 29-17, and the faceoff battle, 14-13.
Parker Giarratana led Manhattan with four points and three goals, while Michael Zingaro recorded 13 saves.
Canisius takes a break from MAAC action with a non-conference tilt against Binghamton on Tuesday. The two New York schools are set to meet in Vestal, beginning at 7 p.m.
