The Canisius indoor track teams are set to travel to New York, N.Y., to compete in the 2016 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, Feb. 21. The Championship will take place at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center, beginning at 9:15 a.m.
“The big race for the men will be Chad Maloy in the 5k,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “He definitely has a shot to get top four. If things go his way and they leave him to the last 800 meters, he's been closing very well and could have a chance at the top seed."
“We have a really good shot of the men's distance medley relay qualifying for the IC4A's," Huckle said. "Brennan Root, A.J. Stuver, Josh Sopchak and Cooper Roach will all be running fresh in the relay towards the end of the meet, looking for a qualifying time of 10:19."
The team will look to place well at this weekend's tournament, but the main focus will be on preparing for the IC4A Championships and future events.
“Really the experience of track for us is to develop the athletes and to make them, holistically better athletes,” Huckle said. “Advancing to those championship races at the IC4A's is one of those pieces of personal development that will help them become a better runner down the road.
“On men's and women's sides were looking to come away with as many personal bests as possible, if we can hit personal bests now then roll it into the outdoor season, it will build the confidence for where they need to be next fall. “
On the women's side Siobhan Quinn is expected to place well in the 3k, as well as Anna Phillips in the 5k.
“Anna should score in the 5k, she's seeded in the top five right now, “ Huckle said. “She could be the first Canisius female athlete to break 18 minutes indoor.”
Other runners Huckle has highlighted for the event are Jade Auchmoody in the mile and Haylie Virginia in the 800.
