The Canisius swimming and diving teams collected their first team-win of the season this afternoon garnering ten individual event wins, including a school record in the 100 backstroke by Cassie Brousseau (57.67).
“Both teams did very well for us today, especially for just coming off of a training trip,” said head coach Scott Vanderzell. “ We had great race work and intensity in our swims.”
Brousseau's 100 back performance was one of three Canisius finishes to break Gannon pool records, the other two coming from both 400 medley relays.
The winning relays featured Brousseau, Marissa Watroba, Katelyn Battaglia and Hannah Graesser on the women's side with Greg Staebell, Wyatt Sintay, Dan Dirrigl and Cam Macdonald taking the top spot for the men.
Vanderzell attributes much of the teams success on the day to a training trip the team went on this past week.
“The trip was very intense, but the team came together and grew closer as a whole,” said Vanderzell. “Since the training trip we have noticed an increase in intensity and focus.”
The sweep for the Golden Griffins marks the sixth win for the men in the past seven years over Gannon and the third time in four years that the women have defeated the Golden Knights.
The Blue and Gold will next compete on Jan. 23 when they take on Niagara from the Flickinger Center at 11:00 a.m.
