Box Score The Canisius College volleyball team attempted to extend its winning streak to four, but was stifled in three sets by Manhattan, in Riverdale, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. With the loss Canisius falls to 4-11 and 2-1 in conference play, while Manhattan is 8-7 and 2-1 in the MAAC.
“When you play not to lose, instead of playing to win, you will eventually end up losing,” head coach Cathy Hummel said. “We lost both sides of the serve and pass battle today and we have to turn the page quick and look to our next opponent, Iona.”
The Griffs posted a .159 hitting percentage for the match, registering 41 kills and just 19 errors on 138 attacks. The Jaspers were just under that with a .153 mark, tallying 42 kills on 144 attacks.
The Griffs outside hitters led the way, as Katlyn Tyler and Rachel Kline both notched 14 on the day. Both Kline and Tyler also had double-digit kills as the duo posted double-doubles. Kline, also proved to be the most efficient player for the Blue and Gold as she registered a .256 hitting percentage.
Grace Streicher distributed the ball on offense for Canisius as she registered 34 assists to lead the team. Meanwhile on the defensive side, libero Jordan Tylec led the squad in digs with 17.
The Griffs played Manhattan tight, dropping the three sets by a combined seven points.
After falling in the first set, 25-23, the Griffs showed resiliency in the second frame, jumping out to a 14-10 lead. Canisius split the next 15 points with the Jaspers to take a 22-17 lead, late in the frame. However Manhattan went on an 8-4 run to knot the set up at 25-25. With the frame on the line, two attack errors by Streicher and Lauren Siebert clinched the win for the Jaspers.
The situation was similar in the deciding frame as the two teams played extremely close with seven tied scores in the stanza. With the score 25-25, Manhattan's most prolific scorer, Claire Van Dyk notched the deciding two points with back-to-back kills to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.
Canisius will wrap up its first road MAAC weekend tomorrow as they face Iona at 1 p.m., in New Rochelle, N.Y.
