Box Score Led by 22 points and 12 rebounds from Tori Jarosz, the visiting Marist Red Foxes dropped the Golden Griffins women's basketball team, 63-49 at the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Marist moves to 16-7 overall and 12-2 in MAAC play, while the Griffs fall to 8-15 on the season and two games below .500 in the MAAC with a 6-8 record.
The Griffs were led by junior Crystal Porter, who was the team's leading scorer for the fourth time this season, with 13 points on 6-9 from the field. Porter also snagged a team-leading six rebounds. Junior Tiahana Mills added eight points in the second half and guard Emily Weber and forward Abby Schwenk each contributed with six points of their own.
Marist was led by Jarosz with 22 points on 8-15 shooting and 12 boards including four offensive and nine points from forward Madeline Blais. The Red Foxes had 21 points off of the Griffs 15 turnovers, contributing to the win for the visiting squad.
Led by three back-to-back-to-back lay-ups by Mills and a jumper by Weber, Canisius made a strong push in the second half to cut the Marist lead down to 37-29 with 15:33, but that would be the closest the Griffs would come for the rest of the game as the Red Foxes went on a 26 to 20 run to close out the game.
With 2:57 left to play, head coach Terry Zeh pulled his starters and got his freshman reserves some quality minutes.
The line-up of sophomore Tamara Miskovic and freshmen Margret Halfdanardottir, Saliah Serrette, Sarah Cooley and Schwenk entered the game with a score of 61-43 and went on a 6-2 run to close-out regulation.
The next game for Canisius will be against the Fairfield Stags when the Blue and Gold travels to Fairfield, CT on Friday, February 13th.
Game Notes: With the loss against the Marist Red Foxes, the Griffs fall to 31-13 all-time against the visiting team…the 14 game losing streak against the Red Foxes is the longest in head coach Terry Zeh's tenure against MAAC opponents….the four points for freshman Sarah Cooley tied a career-high, matching her output against Quinnipiac earlier this season...the start for freshman Abby Schwenk was the first of her career…the six points for Schwenk was a career-high and so was the 23 minutes played.
