Box Score On senior day at the Koessler Athletic Center the Golden Griffins women's basketball team recorded a 13 point victory over the Monmouth Hawks, ending the teams losing skid at six games. Canisius was led offensively by Crystral Porter who had a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds.
The victory comes at the right time for the Blue and Gold as the team has just two more games next week, inlcuding a match-up on Tuesday against Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara. With the win, Canisius moves to 9-18 overall and 7-11 in the MAAC and the loss drops Monmouth to 11-16 and 7-11 in conference play.
Behind Porter was the Griffs dynamic duo of Kayla Hoohuli and Tiahana Mills. The one-two punch combined for 22 points, 10 boards, 10 assists and two blocks. Rounding out the top-five scorers for the Griffs were freshman Margret Halfdanardottir with nine points and junior Emily Weber had eight.
The Hawks scored the first two points of the game but that would be the only time the visiting squad would hold a lead. From 18 minutes left in the first half through the rest of the 38 minutes of action, the Griffs led the game. Canisius went into the half with a 37-25 halftime lead and the Griffs would pull away once they got back onto the court.
The Blue and Gold scored the first seven points of the second half, increasing their lead to 21 points with 17 minutes left to play in regulation. The teams would trade baskets for the majority of the second half until the Griffs took their largest lead with 5:56 left to play, going up 24 points and holding a commanding 58-34 lead and ultimately securing the victory.
Canisius outscored the Hawks 32-24 in the paint and also held the visiting Monmouth squad to under 40 percent shooting (32.8) and under 15 percent from beyond the arc (13.6) for the game. Monmouth was led offensively by guard Jasmine Walker who was the only member of the visiting team to score in double-digits (10).
The Griffs will have a quick turnaround before their next game as the team will host the Niagara University Purple Eagles on Tuesday, Feb. 24 in a double-header on ESPN3.
