Baseball Gets First Win of 2015

Box Score Canisius freshman Ryan Stekl went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored and senior pitcher Deven Stewart allowed just one unearned run on five hits while striking out three in 6.2 innings of work as the Golden Griffins scored their first win of the 2015 season on Sunday by defeating Old Dominion 8-6 at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, S.C. Canisius is now 1-1 on the season, while the Monarchs slipped to 0-3 with the loss.

Canisius piled up 15 hits in the win on Sunday, with four players recording multi-hit games in the victory. Sophomore Jake Lumley had three hits, including a double, while seniors Jesse Puscheck and Connor Panas had two hits apiece, with both players having doubles. Stekl, Panas and freshman catcher Jack Massa each had two RBI, and Puscheck also scored two runs for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius jumped to a 3-0 lead in the home-half of the fourth thanks to RBI-doubles by junior Brett Siddall and Stekl. Later in the frame, Massa singled to left, allowing Stekl to score from third. Panas made it 4-0 in favor of Canisius with an RBI-single to center in the fourth and the Griffs added another run to take a 5-0 lead through five innings after freshman Adam Tricarico roped an RBI-double down the line in right that pushed Lumley across the plate from second base.

Old Dominion posted a run in the seventh to make the score 5-1, but Canisius answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Massa hit a sacrifice-fly to right that plated Stekl. The Monarchs scored twice in the top-half of the eighth before Canisius added a pair of runs in the bottom of that frame on an RBI-double from Panas and an RBI-single from Stekl. In the top of the ninth, Old Dominion scored three runs to make the score 8-6, and the Monarchs had runners at first and third with two outs, but Canisius reliever Iannick Remillard got Connor Myers to groundout to third base to end the game.

Stewart earned the win on the hill after he allowed just one run, an unearned run, in 6.2 innings of work. Only four Old Dominion runners reached third base against Stewart, who also issued three walks. Senior Eric Stolzenburg picthed 0.2 innings and allowed two runs, both unearned, on two hits, and Remillard closed out the final 1.2 innings and earned the save after he allowed three runs on two hits while fanning three.

Old Dominion, which was picked to finish third in Conference USA this season, used six pitchers in the loss. Starter Victor Diaz took the loss for the Monarchs after he allowed three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.

Canisius will return to action Monday when the team takes on Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
