St. Bonaventure Downs Women's Basketball 59-47

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Canisius women's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday night, with a 59-47 loss to St. Bonaventure at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the loss the Griffs dropped to 7-4, while the Bonnies improve to 11-2 overall.

St. Bonaventure's defense took center stage, holding the Griffs to 47 points, with just 20 in the first half, and holding the Blue and Gold to 33.3 percent from the floor on its way to its 11th victory.

The Bonnies' Katie Healy paced all players in the contest scoring 25 points, and notching 12 rebounds for the only double-double of the game. Mariah Ruff also tallied double figures with 15 points to aid the St. Bonaventure attack.

The Grifs on the other hand were held without a double-figure scorer for the first time since Dec. 21, 2009, when Micayla Drysdale led the squad with nine points against Marquette. In this contest it was Lauren D'Hont and Margret Halfdanardottir who led the team with nine points apiece. Saliah Serrette also chipped in eight points in the losing effort.

The Bonnies won the battle of the glass handily, notching 42 rebounds to the Griffs 27. Jasmine Mungo led all Griffs with five boards, while Healy's 12 paced the St. Bonaventure defense.

The Griffs started strong in the opening frame, shooting 41 percent from the field (5-of-12) and holding St. Bonaventure to 37.5 (6-of-16) and ended the first quarter with a slim three-point deficit, 15-12.

In the second quarter, the game began to slip away from the Blue and Gold as the squad mustered just three field goals, and was outscored 14-8, as the Bonnies went into halftime with a 29-20 lead.

The Blue and Gold appeared to be primed for a comeback, as the Griffs opened the third quarter on an 11-7 run to cut the deficit to seven points, however that's as close as the squad came, as the Bonnies outscored the Griffs 17-15 in the third quarter and never allowed the Griffs to get back to a single-digit deficit in the final frame.

Canisius wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 5-4 record, which is the most wins in non-conference play since the 2011-12 season, when the squad notched six, going 6-5 in that stretch.

The Blue and Gold resumes conference play this coming weekend, welcoming Fairfield to the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday, and Siena on Monday. Game times are slated for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively and will both be shown on ESPN3.
