The Canisius swimming and diving teams began the 2015-16 this afternoon at the Burt Flickinger Center, falling 169 to 122 on the men's side, while the women lost 153.5 to 143.5.
“I thought we had a lot of really good swims for our first meet of the year,” said head coach Scott Vanderzell. “It's tough coming into the first meet not knowing what to expect from our freshman, a lot of great things to take from it, and definitely a lot of things we need to work on still.”
Greg Staebell swam well, as he was victorious in the men's 100-yard backstroke (53.13) and the men's 200-yard backstroke (1:56:38).
“I thought Greg had a great meet today, he's a sophomore coming back, he knows what it's all about,” said Vanzderzell.
Wyatt Sintay won the men's 100-yard breaststroke (1:00:83), with Tommy Kirch placing in second with a time of 1:01:25. Sintay also won the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:13.18.
Dan Dirrigl was impressive, getting the top spot in the men's 100-yard butterfly.
On the women's side, Hannah Graesser took home the top spot in the women's 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 24.18. Graesser also had a strong finish in the 100-yard freestyle finishing second with a time of 53.40.
The Griffs won the individual medley on both the men's and women's side with Marrisa Watroba (2:16.81) and Wyatt Sintay (2:03.28) having the best times for their teams. The Golden Griffins also won the 400-yard freestyle relay on both sides.
For the diving team, Vivian Mroz and Kelly Roberts led the way, placing one and two in the women's three meter.
The Griffs will compete again next weekend when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take part in the University of Rochester Invite on Friday and Saturday.
