Griffs Fall to Marist Despite Late Rally

Box Score

The Canisius women's basketball team made a late attempt in the second half to defeat the Marist Red Foxes on their home-floor, but despite a strong finish from the Blue and Gold, the team ultimately fell to the MAAC conference foe, 74-64. The win improves Marist to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in MAAC play, while the loss drops the Griffs, 5-11 overall, below .500 in conference play for the first time this season at 3-4.

The Golden Griffins were led by junior Crystal Porter who had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and senior Kayla Hoohuli who had a team-high 18 points on 8-15 from the field. Also scoring in double-figures for the Griffs were Tiahana Mills, 13 points, 5 assists, 6 steals and 7 rebounds, and Emily Weber who added 13.

Canisius out-scored the home team 40-32 in the paint and also got 17 points off of turnovers compared to Marist's 14, but missed opportunities were the story for the Canisius team, as the Griffs made only 3-11 shots from the charity-stripe, compared to the Red Foxes 15-20. Along with the free-throw woes, the Griffs bench scored only 2 points compared to Marist's 17.

Marist forward Tori Jarosz had a game-high 20 points on 9-11 shooting and guard Sydney Coffey pitched in 16 points on 6-10 shooting to lead the Red Foxes to their sixth conference victory. The home-team shot 50 percent from both the field and 3-point land in the second half compared to the Griffs 40 (field) and 33.3 percent (3-point) to keep the game just out of reach.

The Griffs will look to get back on track on Sunday, January 18, when the Blue and Gold travel to Jersey City, N.J., to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks at 2 p.m.

Game Notes: This was the 43rd all-time meeting between Marist and Canisius, with the Red Foxes holding a 30-13 all-time lead after tonight's contest...The double-double by Crystal Porter was the second double-double of the season, as junior Jasmine Mungo scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds against Manhattan on January 2...Mills six steals were a game-high and also a career high for the junior, who's previous career-high was four....the seven rebounds by Mills was also a season-high for the guard, who's notched six rebounds in a game four times this season.
