The Golden Griffins swimming teams swam in a dual-meet against the Gannon University Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon and the results were split. The Canisius women's team defeated Gannon by a final score of 110-95 while the men's team fell just short, losing 104-101.
The meet was a virtual dual-meet due to the weather in Western New York, as each team swam it's portion of the meet in their home pool. The competition started out with the women's 400-yard medley relay and the Griffs women's team took the first heat. The relay team of Katelyn Battaglia, Jacquie Sagasta, Meghan Tyler and Natalie Ryan won the heat with a time of 4:07.13.
Following the women's 400-yard medley relay, the men swam their heat and Canisius also started the men's day off right, as the relay team of Gregory Staebell, Wyatt Sintay, Dan Dirrigl and Tommy Kirch finished in first with a time of 3:39.54.
Freshmen Rebecca Anthone won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:52.34 and Collin Zapisek followed up Anthone's victory with a victory of his own with a time of 17:01.42 in the 1650-yard freestyle, Anthone would also win the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.77. Marissa Oakey (1:59.50/200-yard freestyle), Hannah Graesser (25:32/50-yard freestyle), Alicia Wheeler (1:00.85/100-yard butterfly) and Marissa Watroba (1:09.76/100-yard breaststroke) also won individual events on the women's side.
The men's side saw Dan Dirrigl (1:48.55/200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly/54:36) and Wyatt Sintay (1:01.23/100-yard breaststroke) each take home individual victories as well.
Canisius' women's 400-yard freestyle relay team took the victory, as the team of Rebecca Anthone, Marissa Oakey, Erika Tozser and Hannah Graesser finished with a time of 3:44.49.
The Griffs will have one more meet in the regular season against Niagara University on January 17th before the Griffs and Purple Eagles host the 2014-15 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Flickinger Center on Feb. 11-14.
