Box Score ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Canisius women's basketball team lost 79-43 to the University of Michigan in the Crisler Center on Friday evening. The Golden Griffins fall to 4-6 on the season.
Senior Kayla Hoohuli reached double figures for the eighth time this season with 10 points, going 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Junior Emily Weber added nine points.
“We are struggling with our compete level at this point of the season. We had it early but have lost it recently,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “This was a tough part of our schedule, but we need to take this time to regain that edge we had at the beginning of the season to get us ready for UB and then the conference schedule.”
Michigan (6-3) jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, taking advantage of four Canisius turnovers in the opening three minutes. A three-point play from junior Crystal Porter followed by a layup from sophomore Laniere Coleman trimmed the Michigan lead to 9-5. The Wolverines would hold the Griffs scoreless for more than four minutes, extending the lead to 20-5. That run turned into a 26-3 stretch for Michigan as the Wolverines built a 27-point lead.
Canisius responded with a 9-2 run, getting five points from Weber and the second 3-pointer of the half from Hoohuli. The Wolverines held Canisius scoreless for the final 4:30 of the half and held a 41-17 halftime lead.
Michigan extended the Canisius scoring drought to more than six minutes as the Wolverines opened a 30-point lead by scoring the first six points of the second half. Canisius wouldn't get closer than 28 points the rest of the way.
Michigan shot 47.1 percent in the game as Katelynn Flaherty had 18 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Cyesha Goree posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as Michigan out-rebounded Canisius 47-26 and scored 48 points in the paint.
Canisius will break for the Christmas holiday and return to the court for its final non-conference game of the 2014-15 season on Monday, Dec. 29, when the Golden Griffins host Big 4 rival the University at Buffalo. Tipoff in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Canisius and Michigan met for the second time in program history. The schools also played during the 1995-96 season… Canisius played a team from the Big Ten conference for the sixth time in program history… Junior Tiahana Mills posted three steals in the game and extended her streak of consecutive games with a steal to 22 consecutive games… Hoohuli made multiple 3-pointers for the seventh time this season.
