The Canisius swimming and diving team has swept the MAAC weekly awards after the team defeated SUNY Fredonia on Saturday afternoon.
Senior's Eddie Quarantillo and Taylor Epstein won the MAAC Diver of the Week Awards and freshmen Gregory Staebell and Rebecca Anthone won the MAAC Swimmer of the Week Awards.
Quarantillo won the award after having another terrific week on the diving board for the Griffs. The Lewiston, N.Y., native won both the men's 1 & 3-meter diving contests, helping lead the Blue and Gold to the team's largest victory this season. Quarantillo won the 1-meter with a score of 285.40 and the 3-meter with a score of 305.10.
Epstein won the women's diver of the week award after contributing to the women's team victory over the Blue Devils. Epstein scored a 219.10 in the 1-meter contest, which was less than 17 points away from a first place finish and scored a 183.30 in the women's 3-meter.
Staebell was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that won with a time of 1:39.50. To go along with the relay team victory, Staebell also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.21 and the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.81, this was the best meet yet for Staebell as he played a crucial part in the Griffs men's team victory.
Anthone had another big week for the Griffs, the freshman freestyler won the women's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.68 and also was part of the first place finishing 200-yard freestyle relay team. Anthone also broke the Fredonia State pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:46.83.
The Golden Griffins will swim again tomorrow, December 18, as the team travels to Amherst, N.Y., to take on the University at Buffalo in a dual-meet at 10:00 a.m.
