Youngstown State Shoots Past Women's Basketball

Box Score

The Canisius women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end in an 80-48 loss to Youngstown State University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday night. The Penguins shot 12-for-20 from behind the arc as the Griffs drop to 4-4 on the season.

Junior Tiahana Mills had 10 points and four assists while junior Crystal Porter added 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Canisius shot a season-low 31 percent from the floor in the loss.

“Everyone needed to do a better job, starting with myself in getting our team ready for a really good Youngstown State team,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh. “They played really well and made every open shot. We have to work on staying together and getting through tough moments in games by continuing to grind.”

Sophomore Lauren D'Hont drained a 3-pointer from the corner and sophomore Laniere Coleman followed with a three-point play to put the Griffs up 14-13 with 13:25 left in the half. Youngstown State held Canisius without a field goal for the next seven and a half minutes, to build a double-digit lead. The Penguins shot 8-for-12 from behind the arc and held a 39-29 lead at the half.

Youngstown State (8-0) carried over that strong shooting from behind the arc to start the second half, making four 3-pointers in the opening seven minutes. Canisius could never cut the deficit to fewer than eight points as the Penguins pulled away with a 24-8 run.

Kelsea Newman scored a game-high 15 points and shot 5-for-9 from behind the arc. Five Youngstown State players reached double figures as the Penguins had 28 assists on 30 made baskets and shot 54.5 percent from the floor.

Canisius will play its next two games away from home, starting with Tuesday's game at No. 20/22 Syracuse University, which will be shown live on Time Warner SportsNet and ESPN3. Game time in the Carrier Dome is set for 7 p.m.

Notes: Canisius and Youngstown State met for the seventh time, with Canisius now holding a 5-2 lead in the series. The teams met for the first time since the 2009-10 season… The 12 3-pointers made by Youngstown State were the most by a Canisius opponent since Michigan State made 12 on Nov. 14, 2013… Mills has 16 assists and seven turnovers in the last four games… Porter now has eight blocks in the last four games.
