The Canisius swimming and diving teams swept the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon as the two teams competed in a dual-meet in Fredonia, N.Y.
The Golden Griffins won both meets by over 50 points, the Blue and Gold men won by a score of 204-86, while the Griffs' women's team won 181-118.
The men's team started out the day by winning the 200-yard medley relay as the relay team of Gregory Staebell, Tommy Kirch, Alex LaPoint and Garrett Graesser won with a time of 1:39.50. Following the relay victory would be a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle by Sean Wurster (10:07.35), a 200-yard freestyle victory with a time of 1:46.98 by Spencer Bray, a 100-yard backstroke win by Staebell (55.21) and a 100-yard Breaststroke victory by senior Sam Hansen (1:01.54).
Also winning events for the men's squad were Colin Landweer (50-yard freestyle/22.05), Kirch (100-yard freestyle/49.07), Staebell (200-yard backstroke/1:57.81), Hansen (200-yard breaststroke/2:13.79), Dan Dirrigl (500-yard freestyle/4:58.97), and LaPoint (100-yard butterfly/54.59). Senior diver Eddie Quarantillo also won both heats of diving as the record holding Griffin won the 1-meter with a score of 285.40 and the 3-meter with a score of 305.10.
Rebecca Anthone led the way for the Golden Griffins' women's team, as the freshman broke the Fredonia State pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:46.83. Anthone also won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.68 and was part of the first place finishing women's 200-yard freestyle relay along with Katelyn Battaglia, Natalie Ryan and Erika Tozser. Hannah Olek also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.51.
The Blue and Gold won the women's 200-yard medley relay as the team of Clare Battaglia, Marissa Watroba, Alicia Wheeler and Hannah Graesser finished with a time of 1:52.38. Graesser also won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.82, the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.47 and the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.89, Watroba won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.24 and Wheeler won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.30 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.18.
After the big victory over the Blue Devils, Canisius will have one more dual meet before winter recess, as the team will take on in-town rival Buffalo on December 18th at 10:00 a.m.
