Box Score OLEAN, N.Y. – The Canisius women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 62-46 loss to St. Bonaventure University at the Reilly Center on Friday evening.
Senior Kayla Hoohuli led Canisius with 16 points, making three 3-pointers on the night. Juniors Tiahana Mills and Crystal Porter each scored 12 points, with Porter also grabbing nine rebounds in 19 foul-plagued minutes.
“There were just a couple of stretches where we came up empty on the offensive end, and St. Bonaventure was able to take advantage with quick baskets on their end,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “I thought we did some good things tonight that we can build on as a team.”
St. Bonaventure built an 11-2 lead as Canisius committed six turnovers in the opening eight minutes of the contest and also missed seven of its first eight shots. The Golden Griffins settled in on the offensive end of the court and chipped away at the Bonnies lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Hoohuli and Mills trimmed the St. Bonaventure lead to as little as one point. Canisius used a stretch where it made six of 10 shots to get back into the contest and trailed by three points at the half.
The Bonnies got to the free throw line six times in the opening minutes of the second half to build a seven-point lead. A 3-pointer from the wing from Mills and a drive to the basket by Porter made it 30-28 with just over 16 minutes remaining. The Griffs would only make one field goal during the next six and a half minutes as the Bonnies forced five Canisius turnovers. St Bonaventure used a 13-3 run to break the game open.
Katie Healy scored a game-high 20 points while Hannah Little scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Canisius held St. Bonaventure to 0-for-10 from behind the arc, but the Bonnies went 20-for-30 from the free-throw line.
