The Canisius men's cross country team recorded the second highest finish in program history on Friday afternoon, as the Golden Griffins finished in 10th place at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
The event, which was held in the Bronx, N.Y., featured the top NCAA talent in the Northeast Region and the Griffs showed they belong. To go along with the men's top-10 finish, the women recorded a high finish of their own, placing 28th in the women's race.
The Canisius men were led by red-shirt senior Chad Maloy who finished the race with a time of 31:18.10, good enough for 37th place which is the second highest finish for a Canisius runner in program history.
“Our men's team raced as well as they possibly could have today,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “Chad and Jeff were outstanding up front for us and our third through fifth runners were rock solid. They put forth a great team effort and it paid off with the top-10 finish.”
Rounding out the top-seven behind Maloy was Jeffrey Antolos (43rd/31:24.52), Michael Anvelt (68th/31:41.11), Brennan Root (69th/31:41.35), Xavier Sauvageau (92nd/32:03.92), Alexander Stuver (169th/33:11.43) and Cooper Roach (188th/33:30.90). Antolos' 43rd place finish ranks fifth all-time in the best finishers for the Griffs.
“We had a chip on our shoulder going into this race after being dropped from the rankings two weeks ago,” said the head coach. “We knew we were capable of running with the top-10 teams in the region and we proved it today. Our men's program established itself as a top-five program in New York State.”
The women's 28th place finishing team was led by graduate student Catherine Phillips, who has had a tremendous season in the Blue and Gold uniform. Phillips finished in 139th place with a time of 22:43.13, her second highest finish in the Regionals. Behind Phillips were Morgan Atkins (155th/22:57.65), Haley Keene (156th/22:59.32), Jamie Wallace (158th/23:00.97), Anna Phillips (165th/23:03.86), Jade Auchmoody (201st/23:36.79) and Carlin Sullivan (210th/23:47.98).
“The women finished one place off from last year's finish (27th), but they ran a much stronger race,” said Huckle. “The overall depth of the field was far greater than last year. Our compression goal for our first through fifth runners was 40 seconds and we cut that in half today, so it was a great pack effort.”
Up next for the Griffs will be the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Nov. 22nd. The races will again be held at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
