The Canisius cross country teams are set to travel to the Bronx, N.Y., to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 14. The races are set to be held at Van Cortlandt Park.
The Griffs enter Friday's race after a second place finish in the MAAC Championships two weeks ago for the men's team and a sixth place finish for the women's. The teams competed in the Regionals last season and the men finished in 16th place and the women in 27th.
“Our men are running really strong this year, a lot stronger than last year and if we can pull it all together, we should be able to finish in the top-15 this year,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “For our women, I think that a top-25 performance is reasonable. I know they are hoping for a top-20 finish and we will see what they can pull off.”
The Golden Griffins top finishers in the races last season were sophomore Jeff Antolos, who finished in 71st, junior Cooper Roach (81st/31:57) and fellow junior Michael Anvelt (94th/32:11) for the men and graduate student Catherine Phillips (95th/22:15) and recent graduate Mikelle Cala (22:39/131st) were the top-finishers on the women's side.
The highest the Griffs have ever finished in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships was when the teamed finished in eighth place in 1995. The 16th place finish last season was the highest since the men finished 14th in 2002. The women's highest finish was when the Griffs finished in second place in 1992. The 27th place finish last season was the highest the team finished since the team finished 27th in 2008.
After the race this week, the Blue and Gold will compete in the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Nov. 22nd.
