The Canisius rowing team competed in the 50th annual Head of the Charles this morning and the Griffs put on a strong show. The event took place in Boston, Mass. The Griffs finished in 23rd, behind MAAC rival Fairfield and ahead of Marist.
“It was a difficult race for us, there was great effort from the boat that maybe didn't show the speed of which we are capable,” said head coach Joel Furtek.”The Charles is a big stage and it doesn't take much of a miss to slip well down in the standings.”
The Varsity-Eight boat, which consisted of Nora Kennon, Anna DeCosta-Klipa, Corrine Kickel, Molly Murphy, Kathryn Hobika, Madeline Kurka, Erin Grim, Liz Reinwald and coxswain Hannah Blum, finished with a time of 4:06.09.
“We definitely fell short of our goals but there will be much to take away from today,” said Furtek. “Our youth promises us great room for improvement in our speed and performances. I look forward to more water time with this amazing team and we will definitely get faster on Monday.”
This was the second time the Griffs competed in the Head of the Charles, with the team finishing in seventh last season.
The Charles was the final regatta of the fall rowing season. The Griffs will be back in action, when the team competes in the spring.
