The Canisius swimming and diving teams opened up the 2014-15 season with a tough loss against MAAC rival Marist as the men's squad fell 158-142 and the women's team fell by a score of 172-121.
Starting the scoring for the Griffs women's team was freshman Rebecca Anthone. Anthone picked up her first collegiate victory as she finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.76, almost three seconds better than the second place finisher. Alicia Wheeler recorded the Golden Griffins second first place finish as the junior won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.19. Sophomore Marissa Watroba also won her event, finishing first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:15.89. The Blue and Gold also won the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Anthone, Erika Tozser, Marissa Oakey and Hannah Graesser, finished with a time of 3:39.64.
Leading the way for the Griffs men's squad was sophomore Wyatt Sintay and senior diver Eddie Quarantillo. Sintay and Quarantillo each won two events in the meet, including the 200-yard breaststoke and 100-yard breaststroke by Sintay and the 1 and 3-meter diving contests by Quarantillo. Sintay finished with a time of 2:11.01 in the 200-yard breaststroke and a time of 59.64 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Quarantillo recorded a score of 289.05 in the 1-meter and a score of 275.92 in the 3-meter.
The top relay team for the Golden Griffins men's team consisted of Tommy Kirch, Dan Dirrigl, Collin Zapsiek and Christian Westermeier. The relay team competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay and finished in second with a time of 3:14.75.
The Griffs next meet will be on Oct. 24th and 25th when the team travels to Rochester, N.Y., to compete in the University of Rochester Invite.
