Baseball Getting National And Regional Accolades

Off to a 14-5 start, its best start since the 2008 season, the Canisius baseball team has been getting regional and national attention from a number of baseball websites.

The Golden Griffins were named the Northeast Region Louisville Slugger Team of the Week by College Baseball Insider. Canisius swept a four-game series at Ohio University last weekend, its first four-game sweep of a road series since a four-game sweep at Mount St. Mary's in March 2008.

Todd Devlin from the Canadian Baseball Network wrote an article on coach Mike McRae and his 300th win.

The Griffs were named to the Mid-Major Hot Board by Perfect Game.

  • "The Golden Griffins are off to a fantastic 14-5 start this spring. Keep an eye on talented ace pitcher Garrett Cortright moving forward. Cortright has a 0.97 ERA in 37 innings of work. He also has struck out 27 and walked eight, while teams are hitting .204."

The 14 wins for Canisius are the most of any team in the Northeast region and six more than any team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Griffs also have 12 road wins on the season, three more than any other team in the country.

Junior Jimmy Luppens, the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, was named the Perfect Game Player of the Day on Saturday. Luppens tied a program record with three home runs and also had a career-high eight RBI in a 16-8 win at Ohio.

Luppens, who earned MAAC Player of the Week honors on Monday, was also named the MAAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Canisius has earned two Player of the Week awards from College Sports Madness and also earned five weekly awards from the MAAC through the first five weeks of the season.
