Swimming and Diving Sweeps Fredonia

The Canisius College swimming and diving teams cruised to a sweep of Fredonia on Saturday, with the women winning 173-110 and the men taking the meet 175-116.

The Griffs finished with the fastest time in every swimming event, paired with taking 3-of-4 diving events, leading to a big win in the team's first meet at the Koessler Athletic Center this season.

“I think it's great,” said head coach Scott Vanderzell. “We've come off a lot of travel over our last six weeks, so it's nice to finish off this way after exams and to give us a push for this next month of training.”

The meet began with diving on Friday night, with junior Eddie Quarantillo winning the 3-meter dive for the sixth-consecutive meet. Quarantillo finished the high-board with a score of 310.75, with freshman Adam Bonk right on his heels with a new career-best in the event (307.30).

Quarantillo also took the top-spot in the 1-meter dive, posting a score of 281.00, holding off Fredonia's Rafael Santiago by 0.20 points.

Sophomore Audrey Mulhisen won the 3-meter dive for Canisius, posting a 259.30, falling just 0.10 short of her own school record in the event. Mulhisen placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 231.10.

On Saturday, the swimmers picked up where the divers left off, taking the top-three spots in each of the 1000-yard freestyles. On the women's side, seniors Anna Schena and Leah Villari finished one-two with Schena posting a 10:59.85, followed just under 10 seconds later by Villari. Freshman Hannah Olek rounded out the trio with a time of 11:21.41.

The men saw the same results, with junior Sean Wurster taking first place (10:07.76), followed closely by senior Sam Hansen (10:12.83) and freshman Michael Berg (10:18.65).

Sophomore Spencer Bray took his first-of-two events on the afternoon in the 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming to a time of 1:44.35 – just five hundredths of a second shy of the pool record. Bray then swam to a 4:40.50 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Clare Battaglia (50- and 100-yard backstrokes) and freshmen Marissa Watroba (50- and 100-yard breaststrokes), Hannah Graesser (50- and 100-yard freestyles and 200-yard IM), Wyatt Sintay (50-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke) and Matt Tanchick (50-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM) each swam to multiple victories in the meet.

Canisius will now have nearly a 1-month layoff before returning to the pool on Jan. 11 at home against Gannon.
