Swimming and Diving Sweeps Geneseo

The Canisius College swimming and diving teams continued their recent runs of success against Geneseo on Saturday, as both the men and women won by identical scores of 144-99.

After breaking a school-record that had previously stood for 18-years in the 1-meter dive at the Rochester Invitational last week, it took only one week for junior Eddie Quarantillo to up his mark again. Quarantillo scored 316.60 in the event, which gave him another first place finish.

Quarantillo also set a new school record in the 3-meter dive, breaking his own previous record from the 2011-12 season with a score of 342.07. The mark qualifies him for NCAA Zone Regionals in the event. Quarantillo became the first diver in program history to qualify for the NCAA Zone meet last week in the 1-meter dive.

Overall, the Griffs had the top-time or score in 17 of the day's 26 events.

The Canisius women began the day with another strong performance in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of sophomore Clare Battaglia, freshman Marissa Watroba, sophomore Alicia Wheeler, and senior Kelli Graber took the first with a time of 1:52.58.

Graber continued the success onto the 50-yard freestyle later in the meet, as she out-touched freshman Hannah Graesser – who won the event in the Griffs' first two competitions this season – to take the top spot with a time of 24.88.

Graesser rebounded quickly however and took first place in the 100-yard freestyle (54.71) just three events later.

Graber and Graesser would later team up with junior Marissa Oakey and sophomore Alex Doody to swim the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:40.34, which was the event's fastest time.

Doody was one of four Griffs to take home two individual victories on the afternoon, placing first in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Battaglia was the other member of the women's team to do so, placing first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard IM.

On the men's side, sophomore Spencer Bray swam the meet's two distance freestyle events and took home the top-spot in both. Bray finished the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.70, and the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:52.68.

Freshman Matt Tanchick won a pair of events for the Griffs as well, winning the 200-yard IM (1:59.63), and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.24).

Freshman Colin Landweer took home the top-spot in the 50-yard freestyle for the Griffs, finishing in 22.17.

The Griffs will now have a two-week layoff before their next competition, when they'll take on local rival St. Bonaventure in Olean on Nov. 16. That meet is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.
