The
Canisius College volleyball team continued its perfect start to Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference play with a four-set win at Manhattan College on Sunday
afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, 26-24 to win their
seventh straight match and maintain first place in the MAAC standings with a
6-0 record while improving to 9-7 overall.
Junior
Emily Elek had her third
double-double of the season with 13 kills and 21 digs. Senior Samantha Good had 11 kills and 10
blocks, becoming the ninth player in program history with 1,000 career kills.
Junior Sydney Palka had her second
double-double of the season with a career-high 45 assists and 14 digs. Senior Allyson Severyn had 23 digs while
senior Logan Sulongga had 11 kills
and a career-high six blocks as Canisius had 15.5 blocks on the day.
"Our formula to being successful is getting contributions from a number of players. Today was no different as all 12 players who were on the court contributed at some point to this win," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "Manhattan has been playing really well, so this is another good road win for our team.
"I'm proud of how our team handled these road matches at the start of our conference schedule, and it is great to come home for a large part of the next few weeks."
In
the first set, Canisius jumped out to a 6-2 lead as Manhattan would even the
score two times including at 12-12. The Griffs never gave up the lead
and won the set by taking the final three points, capped by a kill from
Sulongga.
Manhattan
pulled away late in the second set, winning four straight points to turn an
18-18 tie into a 22-18 advantage and eventually even the match at one set
apiece. The teams went back and forth in the third set, with Manhattan tying
the score at 22-22. The Griffs had two set points at 24-22, but Manhattan
fought off both. The Griffs earned their third set point after a Manhattan
error and would go on to win the set on another Manhattan error.
Manhattan
(9-9, 4-3 MAAC) wouldn't go quietly in the fourth set as Canisius held a 22-19
lead before the Jaspers won three straight points to knot the score at 22-22.
After trading sideouts, the Jaspers earned a set point at 24-23 but a kill from
Palka evened it at 24-24. After a kill from junior Roxanne Hernandez, the Griffs won the match on a service ace from
Good.
Mariana
Furquim had a double-double for the Jaspers with 15 kills and 15 digs. Malia
McGuinness also had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Jamie Collareta
had 44 assists while Kelsey Huntoon had 30 digs.
Canisius returns home to play five of its next
