The
Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams received the Team
Scholar All-American Award for the 2012 spring semester, presented by the
College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). This marks the second
straight semester each team has received the honor.
The
men posted a team cumulative GPA of 3.28 for the spring semester. Placing in
the top-25 percent in the nation, the Golden Griffins tied Ohio State
University for 17th place among the 77 Division-I men's teams to
receive the honor.
The
women also recorded a team cumulative GPA of 3.28 for the spring semester. The Golden
Griffins joined 145 Division-I women's teams from across the nation to earn the
honor, tying for 92nd overall with George Washington University,
Boise State University, University of Hawaii, University of Rhode Island and
crosstown opponent University at Buffalo.
To be eligible for the CSCAA national honor, a team must achieve
a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
This
past season, 12 total members of the Canisius men's and women's swimming and
diving teams were selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team, including seven women
and five men.
Both
teams achieved their most successful appearances at the 2012 MAAC Swimming and
Diving Championships. Breaking a combined 26 program records, each team posted
their best finishes in program history with a second-place finish for the men
and fifth-place finish for the women.
In
addition, a pair of Golden Griffin men earned conference championships as Shawn Parkhurst won the 1000-freestyle
individual title and Steve Pochatko
captured his first conference title in the 100 backstroke. Men's and women's
diving coach Meili Carpenter also
earned MAAC Diving Coach of the Year at the conference championships.
