QUICK HITTERS

 

  • The Canisius College women's basketball team wraps up regular-season play against Siena College in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
  • Siena defeated Canisius 67-61 in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 2, the opening game on the MAAC schedule for both teams.
  • Canisius and Siena are playing in the final game of the regular season for the second consecutive year.
  • Canisius is playing the same opponent in the first game and last game of MAAC play for the first time since the 2001-02 season (Rider). 
  • Through Friday's games, the Griffs are second in the country with an assist on 71.1 percent of their field goals. Canisius has an assist on 77.7 percent of its baskets in the last nine games.
  • Canisius ranks sixth nationally in free-throw percentage and currently leads the MAAC at 78 percent. Junior Ashley Durham ranks 10th nationally and leads the MAAC at 88.7 percent, which would be the highest single-season percentage in program history.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito ranks 23rd nationally in 3-point field goal percentage.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli has made 52 3-pointers on the season, the most among all MAAC freshmen and fourth-most by a freshman in program history.
  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle is averaging 14.9 points in the last seven games and is shooting 55.6 percent on two-point shots in the last 20 games.
  • Canisius is 6-1 on the season in games decided by five points or fewer or games that have gone to overtime.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

 

 

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

 

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year, leads Canisius in scoring (11.6) and rebounding (5.2). She has scored in double figures 21 times in her career against MAAC opponents and is shooting 41.2 percent on 3-pointers in the last 10 games.
  • Junior Ashley Durham is second in the MAAC in assists per game (4.4). Durham has scored in double figures in seven of the last 12 games. She ranks first in the conference in free-throw percentage (88.7) - the highest single-season percentage in program history.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, has made 61 3-point field goals this season, accounting for 74.4 percent of her made field goals. Morabito has made three or more 3-pointers in 13 games and has scored in double figures 15 times.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli is shooting 41.8 percent on 3-pointers through 17 MAAC games, which is fourth in the conference, and is averaging 9.6 points per game in conference play. Hoohuli has drawn a team-high 11 charges on the season, including one against Manhattan on Friday night.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes has grabbed at least five rebounds in 13 games this season and has recorded at least one steal in 17 games. Wilkes leads the team with a 48.5 field goal percentage, including a 54.8 field goal percentage at home.
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season, has missed the last 11 games and is out indefinitely with a leg injury. Braun is shooting 50.7 percent from the field in her last 14 appearances and has at least one steal in 14 of her last 16 appearances.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp has 29 rebounds in her last five appearances, with 12 of those coming on the offensive glass. VandeBovenkamp has made 27 of her last 31 free throws. 
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox has scored six or more points in eight games this season, including a season-high 11 points against Fairfield. The 6-foot-3 forward has a block in 31 career games, including eight blocks in the last 11 games.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner is averaging 10.8 minutes in her last 12 appearances and 8.4 rebounds per 40 minutes this season.
  • Freshman Brooke Angelos has played at least 21 minutes in each of the last three games and had a career-high six assists against Fairfield. Angelos is averaging 5.2 assists per 40 minutes.

 

 

SIENA SCOUT

 

  • Siena enters Sunday's game with a 10-16 overall record and 8-9 record in the MAAC after an 87-66 loss at Niagara on Friday night.
  • Siena is in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with the Purple Eagles.
  • Junior Lily Grenci is second in the MAAC in scoring (15.4) and fourth in rebounding (7.7). Grenci has scored in double figures in 18 straight games.
  • Senior Cristina Centeno is sixth in the league in assists (3.6) and fourth in steals (2.1). The trio of Grenci, Centro and senior Maja Gerlyng accounts for 61.1 percent of the Saints' offense.
  • Siena defeated Canisius 67-61 in the MAAC opener on Jan. 2. Centeno had 20 points and six assists while Grenci had 18 points and eight rebounds.
  • In MAAC play, Siena is averaging 59.2 points while allowing 60.9 points. The Saints are shooting 38.8 percent and allowing 42.2 percent. The Saints are second in rebounding margin (+1.8), fifth in defensive rebounding percentage (66.9) and second in offensive rebounding percentage (36.4).
  • Siena coach Gina Castelli is in her 22nd season leading the Saints. Castelli's 334 wins are the third-most in MAAC history and the 1986 Canisius graduate has led Siena to seven MAAC regular-season titles and the 2001 MAAC Championship.

 

 

SERIES HISTORY VS. SIENA

 

  • Canisius and Siena are meeting for the 63rd time, with the Saints holding a 41-21 lead in the all-time series.
  • The home team has won six of the last seven meetings in the series, with the Golden Griffins winning three straight against the Saints in the KAC.
  • Siena defeated Canisius 67-61 on Jan. 2. The Saints built a 32-21 halftime lead and held off a second-half Canisius rally as the Griffs got as close as one (56-55) with 3:36 left.
  • Ashley Durham had 14 points, going 8-for-8 from the line. Kayla Hoohuli had 13 points and Jen Morabito had 11 as the duo went 6-for-6 on 3-pointers. Jamie Ruttle had 13 points and seven rebounds.
