VESTAL, N.Y. - The
Canisius women's basketball team never trailed and went 9-for-16 from behind the arc en route to
snapping a three-game losing streak with a 61-48 win at Binghamton University
in the Events Center on Tuesday night to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Senior
Ashley Wilkes and junior Jamie Ruttle each had 13 points on the
night, with Ruttle shooting 6-for-9 in the game. Junior Jen Morabito went 3-for-6 from behind the arc while freshman Crystal Porter had eight rebounds in 16
minutes.
"I felt we had good ball movement and intensity to start the game, but lacked that to start the second half," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "It was good to create some separation before Binghamton made its run.
"We will build off this win and get ready to play a good Akron team this weekend."
Canisius
started the game by making five of its first seven shots, including its first
three 3-pointers, going up 13-6 on a 3-pointer from sophomore Kayla Hoohuli just over five minutes
into the contest. The Griffs held Binghamton without a field goal for more than
five and a half minutes building a nine-point lead. Binghamton held Canisius
without a field goal for nearly four minutes, but a deep jumper from Wilkes
halted the Canisius drought and made it 22-13. Morabito followed that with her
second 3-pointer of the first half to push the lead to 12 points.
Binghamton
(0-6) would trim the Canisius lead to five points on three occasions, but the
Griffs would never let the Bearcats make it a one-possession game in the first
half. The third 3-pointer from Morabito put Canisius ahead 32-24 at the break.
Canisius
overcame a slow offensive start to the second half by forcing Binghamton into
three turnovers in the first four minutes of the half. The Griffs didn't score
their first basket until three and a half minutes into the half, using baskets
on consecutive possessions to go up 36-26 with 16 minutes left in the half. Those
two baskets started a 15-3 run for the Griffs, which included a 3-pointer from
three different players, going up 47-29 with 12 minutes left in the half. Canisius went up by as many as 21 points,
leading 51-30, before Binghamton scored 10 straight points to make it 51-40
with six and a half minutes left.
The
Griffs forced turnovers on three of the next four Binghamton possessions, and
used jumpers from Ruttle on consecutive trips down the court to keep the lead
in double digits. Binghamton would get as close as nine before Canisius went 5-for-6
from the free-throw stretch to put the game away.
Vaneeshia
Paulk led Binghamton with 17 points, including 11-for-15 from the free-throw
line. Canisius held Binghamton to 33.3 percent from the field.
Canisius
returns to the road on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins take on the
University of Akron. Tipoff at James A. Rhodes Arena is set for 2 p.m.
