DETROIT - The
Cansius women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2012-13 season
in a 65-54 setback at the University of Detroit in Calihan Hall on Tuesday
night.
Junior
Jamie Ruttle led Canisius with 18
points on the evening. Senior Allison
Braun and freshman Tiahana Mills each
had eight points. Detroit held Canisius to 35 percent from the field
"I
wasn't pleased with our effort tonight, both offensively and defensively. We
tried different things to guard Brown, and weren't able to slow her down,"
Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "We
need to get better at running our offensive systems and be willing to make
reads and adjustments when teams try to take things away."
Detroit
took advantage of early Canisius turnovers and a slow start from the field by
the Griffs as the Titans built a 12-2 lead with 11:28 left in the first half.
Canisius went 1-for-10 to start the game and had four turnovers in that
stretch. The Griffs would start knocking down shots, scoring on seven of its nine
next possessions, but couldn't make a big run, trimming the Detroit lead to
23-16 with just over six minutes left in the half. The Titans had their largest
lead of the first half - 31-20 - with 3:15 left after Shareta Brown put back
her own miss. Canisius scored seven of the final nine points, capped by a layup
from Ruttle in the final seconds, and trailed 33-27 at the break.
The
Titans (2-0) scored the first 11 points of the second half as Canisius was
scoreless during the opening six minutes of the second half. The Titans went up
by as many as 19 points, taking a 51-32 lead with just under 11 minutes left in
the half. Canisius went on a quick 8-2 run and a 3-pointer from junior Jen Morabito rimmed out that would have
cut the Detroit lead to 10 with eight minutes left. The Griffs could never get
the deficit into the single digits the rest of the way.
Brown
led Detroit with 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Rosanna Reynolds had 15 points
while Audrey Matteson had 12 points and five assists. The Titans shot 49
percent from the floor and held a 44-28 edge on the glass.
Canisius
returns home for its next two games, both the opening game in a doubleheader
with the Golden Griffin men's basketball team. Canisius hosts Bucknell on
Saturday, with tipoff in the KAC set for 1:30 p.m.
