The
Canisius College volleyball team swept Rider University at Alumni Gymnasium in
Lawrenceville, N.J. on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-18,
25-15, 25-16 to improve to 13-10 overall and 10-3 in the Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference. Canisius has double-digit wins in conference play for the
sixth time in the last seven seasons.
Junior
Jessica Warner led Canisius with 13
kills to go along with nine digs and a .303 attack percentage. Four other
Griffs had seven or more kills with senior Logan
Sulongga posting eight kills and a .438 attack percentage in two sets. Junior
Sydney Palka posted her fourth
double-double of the season with 36 assists and 12 digs while senior Allyson Severyn had 21 digs.
"You
can never take a road win for granted, especially one in three sets. We got a number of good
efforts from a lot of players today, and Sydney continued to distribute the
ball to a variety of hitters," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We will try to carry this solid play to
Baltimore and work to get another road win."
Canisius
carried over its efficient offensive play from last week's match at Marist to
the first set at Rider by posting a .455 attack percentage and 22 kills in the
opening set. The Griffs won the first three points and never trailed in the set
as Rider would cut the deficit to 13-12. Canisius then won three straight
points to build a cushion and closed out the set on a kill from junior Emily Elek.
The
teams stayed tight for the first half of the second set, with the Griffs leading
14-13 after a service error. Canisius would win 11 of the final 13 points in
the set, including the last five points on the serve of Good, and went up 2-0
in the match after a kill from Warner.
Rider
(10-12, 4-9 MAAC) took an early 7-3 lead in the third set before the Griffs
used a 6-1 run to take a 9-8 lead after a Rider error. With the score tied at
10-10, the Griffs created separation with a three-point run and then pushed the
lead to 19-11 after another Rider error. Canisius closed out the matc on
back-to-back kills from senior Samantha
Good and Warner.
Bridget
Sheerin led Rider with nine kills while Nicole Moorman had eight kills. Ashlee
Amatulli had 24 assists, and Brittany Gajewski had 14 digs.
Canisius
concludes the weekend road trip on Sunday, in Baltimore at Loyola
University. Match time in the Reitz Arena is set for 2 p.m.
