QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius College women's basketball returns to the road this weekend, starting with Friday's Kid's Day game at Manhattan.
  • The Golden Griffins are playing their second consecutive Kid's Day game, after an 85-74, overtime win over Iona on Monday.
  • Canisius is playing in its third Kid's Day game away from home in the last four years (Rider in 2008-09 and Niagara in 2009-10). Canisius is 9-3 in its last 12 Kid's Day games.
  • The Griffs rank fourth in the country with an assist on 71.1 percent of their field goals. 
  • Canisius has shot over 40 percent in each of the last seven games, the longest streak since a Division I program-record eight-game stretch to end the 2003-04 season. 
  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle leads the team in scoring and rebounding, and the Burlington, Ontario native is averaging 13.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in the last nine games.
  • Junior Ashley Durham entered the week 11th in the country in free-throw percentage.  
  • Durham set career highs with 29 points, nine assists, six 3-point field goals and 43 minutes played in Monday's win over Iona.
  • Canisius rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit (55-41 with 12:23 remaining) on Monday, matching its Division I program record for biggest second-half deficit overcome in a win.
  • Canisius has a winning record at the halfway point of its regular-season schedule for the first time since 2008-09 and for the fourth time under Terry Zeh. Prior to 2004-05, Canisius didn't have a winning record midway through the regular season since 1994-95.
  • Canisius scored 37 bench points Monday, the most since March 6, 2009, against Niagara.
  • Canisius leads the MAAC in free-throw percentage (77.7) and ranks 13th nationally.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

 

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year, leads Canisius in scoring (11.5) and rebounding (5.3). She has scored in double figures in seven of the last nine games and is shooting 57.4 percent inside the arc in the last seven games.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, has made 33 3-point field goals this season, accounting for 73.3 percent of her made field goals. Morabito has made three or more 3-pointers in seven games and is tied for team lead by scoring in double figures nine times.
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season, is shooting 52.5 percent from the field in the last 12 games. Braun has at least five rebounds in eight games and has at least one steal in 13 of the last 14 games.
  • Junior Ashley Durham has 39 assists in the last seven contests and is third in the MAAC in assists per game (4.5). Durham also ranks second in the conference in free-throw percentage (89.2) and has made 48 of her last 51 free throws.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli has 21 3-pointers in the last 10 games. She had 10 rebounds on Monday, the first Golden Griffin with double-digit boards this season. Hoohuli has drawn a team-high seven charges on the season and is averaging 10.4 points in the last seven games.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp is averaging 8.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the last six games.  She had a career-high with five blocks against Cornell on Dec. 28. VandeBovenkamp is shooting 53.3 percent from the floor in the last three games and has made her last 14 free throws.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes has at least five rebounds in eight games this season and has recorded at least one steal in nine games. Wilkes leads the team with a 49.3 field goal percentage, including a 59.5 field goal percentage at home.
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox has scored six or more points in six games this season. The 6-foot-3 forward has a block in 25 career games, including eight blocks in her last nine appearances.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner is averaging 9.0 rebounds per 40 minutes and has made 11 of her last 13 free throws.  
  • Freshman Brooke Angelos is averaging 5.3 assists per 40 minutes.

MANHATTAN SCOUT

  • Manhattan enters Friday's game with an 8-8 record and 2-2 record in the MAAC. The Jaspers had won six straight before losing twice last weekend.
  • The Jaspers opened conference play with wins against Rider (59-45) and Loyola (61-46), but lost to Fairfield (63-59) and Marist (61-41) last weekend.
  • Lindsey Loutsenhizer ranks sixth in the conference in scoring (13.2 points per game) and seventh in rebounding (6.1). The senior guard also is shooting 39.1 percent on 3-pointers.
  • Nadia Peters is the only Jasper to start each game, and is second in the MAAC in steals (2.4).
  • Sophomore Monica Roeder is averaging 11.2 points and has a team-high 30 3-pointers.
  • Manhattan is sixth in scoring offense (56.9) and second in scoring defense (55.2). The Jaspers lead the MAAC in field goal percentage (39.2), steals (12.3) and turnover margin (5.2). Manhattan has a defensive rebounding percentage (60.4) and offensive rebounding percentage of (31.5).
  • John Olenowski is in his third season as head coach at Manhattan and has a 47-33 record. Olenowski led Manhattan to a school-record 24 wins last season and an appearance in the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational.

SERIES HISTORY VS. MANHATTAN

  • Canisius and Manhattan are meeting for the 49th time, with the Golden Griffins holding a 28-20 lead in the all-time series.
  • Manhattan has won the last three meetings between the teams, winning by double digits in each matchup last season.
  • In last year's game in Riverdale, Manhattan scored the first 17 points of the game en route to the 54-42 win. Canisius cut the lead to five points but could never get any closer.
  • Jamie Ruttle averaged 10.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the two meetings with Manahttan last season.
  • Fourteen of the last 20 meetings between the teams have been decided by single digits, with 10 of those 14 meetings either being decided by five points or fewer or going to overtime.
