The Canisius College softball team rebounded to score seven
runs on seven hits and freshman pitcher Jen Consaul earned her fifth win of the
season as the Blue and Gold posted a doubleheader split at Siena by beating the
Saints 7-0 in the second game Friday afternoon in Loudonville, N.Y. Siena used
a six-run third-inning to score a 10-2 win in five innings in the first game.
Canisius is now 17-18 overall and 4-6 in MAAC play, while Siena moved to 16-21
overall and 4-6 in conference action.
Consaul tossed a three-hit shutout where she fanned three as
she improved to 5-3 on the year in the circle. The Griffs scored four times in
the top of the first to provide her with all the help she would need on the
scoreboard. Junior Lizzy Gatto went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run
scored in the nightcap, while sophomore Katie Medina went 1-for-3 with two runs
scored and a run knocked in.
Canisius took a 2-0 lead when Gatto and Medina scored after
a Siena fielding error, and freshman Valorie Nappo made it 4-0 in favor of the
visitors when she knocked in two runs with a base hit to right. In the fifth,
senior Emily Helbig roped an RBI-double to left that allowed Medina to score to
push the lead to 5-0, and Canisius ended the scoring in the seventh with a pair
of runs, capped by an RBI-double off the bat of Gatto.
The win ended Canisius' six-game losing streak in MAAC play,
which dated back to a 5-3 home loss to Manhattan April 10. That losing streak
was pushed to six straight after the Saints took down the Griffs 10-2 in the
opener in a five-inning game.
Canisius took an early 2-0 lead in the first game, thanks to
a two-run homer by Helbig, her third of the season. Senior Paige Freiberger led
off the frame by drawing a walk, and Helbig followed with her two-run shot to
right. Those would be Canisius' final runs of the day as the Saints scored six
times in the home half of the third and then plated four more runs in the
fourth to force the NCAA mercy rule.
Helbig's homer was one of the Blue and Gold's four hits in
the loss, while senior Lauren Hope, junior Lauren Falzone and Nappo added hits
as well to the losing effort. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Baun took the loss for
Canisius after she allowed 10 runs, six earned, on seven hits while striking
out six and walking three.
The Griffs will return to action Wednesday, April 27, when
the team hosts long-time rival Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex in a MAAC
doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The twinbill will be a part of
Canisius' efforts to "Beat Cancer With a Bat", and fans are encouraged to wear
pink and make cash donations to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
