The
Canisius College women's basketball team set the program record for fewest
points allowed at the Division I level in the 70-28 win over Rider University
in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins
improve to 9-18 overall and 5-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Freshman
Jen Lennox led the Golden Griffins
with a career-high 16 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.
Senior Micayla Drysdale had 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Jen Morabito had 12 points and was
2-for-4 from behind the arc. Ten of the 11 Golden Griffins scored in the game
and all 11 played double-digit minutes.
"We've
been playing so well in practice, and before the game we talked about carrying
that success in practice over to the game. I think that definitely happened
today," Canisius coach Terry Zeh
said. "We flowed well offensively, played well collectively on defense and did
a good job rebounding the basketball."
Canisius
jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minute - getting a jumper from Lennox
and 3-pointer from Drysdale. The Griffs would build a 14-3 lead on a 3-pointer
from the wing from sophomore Ashley
Durham. Rider scored back-to-back baskets to make it 14-7, but a layup from
sophomore Melissa Gardner started a
12-0 run with five different players scoring during the four-minute stretch.
Canisius started 15-for-24 (62.5 percent) from the floor and shot 57.1 percent
in the first half as the Griffs took a 41-15 lead into the locker room.
After
Rider scored two of the first three baskets to start the second half,
Canisius extended its lead to 52-19 by scoring nine straight points - getting a
3-pointer and jumper from Drysdale, layup from Courtney VandeBovenkamp and layup from Durham. The Griffs held
Rider to one basket in the final 10:40 of the game, which came with 18 seconds
remaining in the contest.
Sophomore
Caitlin Bopp led Rider with six points and seven rebounds while Sarah Homan,
Carleigh Brown and Shereen Lightbourne had five points apiece. The Griffs held
freshman MyNeshia McKenzie to two points and zero rebounds after McKenzie came
into the game averaging 19 points and 11.5 rebounds in the last four games.
Canisius
concludes its three-game homestand with its final home game of the regular
season on Thursday night, when the Golden Griffins host rival Niagara
University. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with Senior Night festivities scheduled
for about 15 minutes prior to tipoff.

The six assists for Drysdale were a season high... Lennox scored in double
figures for the second time this season (12 points at Binghamton on Nov. 16)...

2009-10)... Canisius improved to 52-11 under Zeh when scoring 70 or more points
in a game... Canisius improves to 13-2 in 15 all-time meetings with Rider in
