Women's Basketball Road Trip Blog: Kent State

  • We're on the way back to Buffalo after a very enjoyable road win. The Griffs had some delicious postgame food at Chipotle and then ice cream at Handel's.
  • Canisius obviously played very well today, handling Kent State's locking down on the Canisius post players. They were sending everyone to the blocks on the entry pass. That took a little while for Canisius to adjust, but knocking down the open 3-pointers helps that.
  • I'm deep into reserach on finding the last time Canisius had four players with 15 points or more in a game this season. Already back in the 02-03.
  • Now the key for Canisius is to build on something like this. We've seen some very good flashes from the team and from some individual players. In the end, it's only one game, but you take that successful feeling and try to keep improving.
  • I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season. We'll be back on New Year's Day with the road trip to start the conference season.

  • We're courtside here at the M.A.C. Center. It's a neat little gym with the stands very close to the court on the side opposite the benches. There is no media seating over there, it is on the second level behind one of the baskets.
  • Mike Scott is on the second level in the corner, similar to where the visiting radio is at Buffalo State Sports Arena for Griffs' games.
  • Kent State is a very young team, with only one player on the roster who played against the Griffs in last year's season opener. They are a combination of juniors and freshmen with no sophomores and seniors on the team. We don't see that mix very often.
  • I didn't see a scouting report or watch the cut tape with the team on Saturday, but from watching a little practice on Saturday and talking with Coach Zeh a little bit it sounds like Kent State runs some "Princeton" offense. That means the defense has to stay disciplined because if it misses an assignment, then that could to a wide-open layup.
  • I'm interested to see the quality of play in this game. The Golden Flashes haven't played since Dec. 6, against St. Bonaventure when they played very well. The Griffs had a couple of days off with finals and I believe Kent State had finals as well. That's a mentally taxing week and taking a number of days off from game play can lead to some sloppy basketball. We'll see if that happens.
  • Also, if you're a Saturday Night Live fan, do yourself a favor and if you haven't seen it yet, check out the Tim Tebow skit from last night. It's well worth five minutes of your time.

  • The Griffs are going through their walkthrough for today's game at Kent State. The main gym wasn't available, and it looked like the change-over crew was working on it as it appeared they had graduation on Saturday. We're in a back gym called the Annex. It was a long walk (luckily inside) through the M.A.C. Center. It's really just a huge multi-purpose room that can be used for a number of sports throughout the winter.

  • More snow on the ground here in Kent than there is in Buffalo (or Cleveland for that matter)

  • Mike Scott and I had the first HORSE game of the season. He was very excited this morning, calling me out numerous times. The first time happened in the lobby. The second time when we had to climb a bunch of stairs to get into the M.A.C. center. He got to the top, started jumping up and down like Rocky and pointed at me. The last time came when we got to the back gym here. There is a chain-link fence serving as the doors. He was waiting for me at the door, held the door open, pointed at it and said "Me and you Lozar, in a STEEL CAGE." Braun and Court laughed for awhile as they were right in front of me.

  • The hype was better than the game. A shutout victory by yours truly to take a 1-0 lead. Next scheduled game is Jan. 2 at Siena prior to the MAAC opener for the Griffs.

  • When you're around a team a lot, it's always extremely noticeable (at least to me) when one of the players does something different with his/her socks. This morning, it's Kayla. Normally she has the high socks, but this morning, no sock barely any sock is showing.

  • Pre-game at 10:30. I would think brunch for pregame. Yes!

  • Not much to report back after dinner, a fairly uneventful dinner.
  • The main thing was how far away the bus driver had to park because there was no room in that parking lot and it was tight turns. Dan could only turn one way out of the parking lot, so after dropping the team off, he turned right, came back to the hotel to turn around (about a half-mile away), then came back to the plaza and parked up by another hotel. He left about 10 minutes before the team left to go get the bus and bring it near the restaurant. Great job by Dan on a cold night here in central Ohio!
  • Team leaves for shootaround at 7:15 a.m. Early wakeup for bagels in Coach T's room.

  • We've arrived at our destination for the night - the Courtyard Marriott in Stow, Ohio. Personally, it's my fourth straight weekend in my home state!
  • I was toting some Christmas presents under the bus as I will see my family at the game tomorrow and have to do a gift exchange since I won't be seeing them next weekend.
  • The weather in the Northeast Ohio area was a little snowy/icy. It was slow driving for a little bit. On 90 East in Ohio there was an accident backing up traffic for a few miles. When we got on Route 8, there was an accident one exit ahead of ours. Luckily, we made the move to get off at one exit earlier, and then could see the accident was before the on ramp to get back on OH-8.
  • The feature presentation on the bus was The Help.
  • Radio braodcaster Mike Scott is already running his mouth about HORSE tomorrow. Our first meeting of the season as he ducked me the first two road trips and last week at Ohio State we didn't go over to the arena before shootaround due to the noon tipoff.
  • Off to TGI Friday's for dinner.
