Canisius
College women's basketball coach Terry
Zeh announced today the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters
of Intent. Tiahana Mills (Binghamton,
N.Y.) and Emily Weber (Clifton Park,
N.Y.) will join the Golden Griffins for the 2012-13 season.
"We're
real excited to add these two players to our program," Zeh said. "They are
outstanding young women as well as outstanding basketball players."
Mills,
who attends the same high school as current Canisius sophomore Jen Morabito, averaged 12.7 points per
game as a junior, earning Class AA Ninth-Team All-State honors, the
second-straight year she's been honored by the New York State Sports Writers Association.
The 5-foot-7 guard also earned Section IV Player of the Year honors after the
2010-11 season.
"Tiahana
is an athletic point guard who can really defend on the ball," Zeh said. "She
has the ability to pass and make plays in tight spaces."
Weber
has led Shenendehowa in scoring each of the past two years. As a junior, Weber
averaged 18 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.0 steals and shot 55.3
percent from the field - the third straight year Weber has shot over 50 percent
from the field. Weber earned Class AA Third-Team All-State as a junior and Fourth-Team
honors as a sophomore. The 5-foot-7 guard also was named the Times-Union Player
of the Year last season.
"Emily
is a bouncy, taller guard who can really shoot the basketball," Zeh said.
"We've had a lot of players like her who have been successful in our program."
Canisius
will not graduate a senior from the 2011-12 team, the only women's basketball
program in the MAAC without at least two seniors on the current roster.
Canisius
returns to the court on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins play at Kent State.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
